Tonsils & Adenoids

First Line of Defense

Tonsils and Adenoids are your body’s first line of defense, otherwise known as your immune system. They are masses of tissue that are found in the back of your throat. Their job is to stop viruses and bacteria as it enters the body through the nose or mouth and “test” it before allowing it to pass through causing infection in other areas.

People typically will have problems with this area of the body when they have recurrent infections of the throat or ear and enlargement or obstruction in this area that causes sleep, breathing, and swallowing problems.

Chronic Tonsillitis

Other more severe problems are chronic tonsillitis, infections of the pockets within the tonsils, and abscesses around the tonsils making them sore and swollen. Other symptoms are a foul smell from the mouth and cheese-like formations on the tonsils or adenoids.

Seek help from Miya & Torchinsky ENT if you are experiencing symptoms of infected or enlarged tonsils or adenoids. Our physicians will do a physical examination and take throat cultures/strep test, an X-ray if necessary to determine the size of the adenoids as well as blood tests for the possibility of mononucleosis.
